The typical depth of a shower box shelf is 3.5 inches, the width of a wood stud. In a high rise building, the steel studs may be 2.5 inches deep and this should be considered. This is still wide enough for most bottles.

Tempered glass is today considered essential for safety and its use is widely recommended. If glass is used for bathroom enclosures, tempered glass must be used BY LAW. Tempered glass is safe because, should it break, it shatters into tiny pieces without blunt edges, preventing serious lacerations or cuts and this protecting the user from physical injury. This shattering pattern is standardized and covered by UNE-EN 12150-2:2005 ERRATUM: 2011 Standard, and must be complied with by bathroom enclosures manufacturers.

Shower surrounds can be installed directly over securely fastened ceramic tile. Loose ceramic tiles and plastic tiles must be removed, and the walls will need to be sanded smooth before installation. In new installations, the enclosure should be applied over waterproof backer board.

The anti-scale treatment (AST) is a special treatment applied to the glass screens to make them smoother and therefore reduce water retention. Being an amorphous material, glass has a completely discontinuous molecular structure and its surface looks very irregular and rough at the microscopic level. With the AST anti-scale treatment these imperfections are filled, so the smooth glass surface retains far fewer drops of water or lime scale. This makes the shower easier to wipe dry and free from lime
